Henry lived in Luton. Prior to enlisting he was employed by Messer's A&F Higgins of Bute Street, Luton. On the 27th December 1915, whilst still undergoing training, he married Edith May Coleman at Luton Parish Church. On the 28th November 1917, the Royal Engineers were called upon to strengthen the defensive line at Bourlon Wood. The work took many hours, with very many casualties, including Major Frederick Henry Johnson V.C. Henry, under heavy shell fire, twice tried to rescue the wounded man, eventually being successful, and bringing him back to the advance dressing station. It was only later that Henry learned the identity of the man he rescued, as Major Johnson. For his bravery, he was awarded the Military Medal. After the war Henry returned to Luton, spending the rest of his days living and working in the town. Shortly before his death he moved to be nearer to his daughter and died in 1984 at Ashford in Surrey of bronchial-pneumonia. He was the only son of Isaac Smith Hewson and his wife Maria.
