Francis went out to the Dardenalles in June 1915. He arrived in Egypt on the 5th July 1915 but got Entric Fever on the 25th September. He went into hospital and was discharged from there on the 26th November 1915, when he was sent home. Francis was discharged from the army and was awarded the SWB. He resided at 11 Lower Baston Street, Bury-St-Edmunds, later Lloyds Bank House, Chelmsford. In 1942, Francis became Civil Defence duties Warden and served in Wardens' Service, Braintree
